An improvising quartet led by the tireless guitar wizard Bill Frisell, Floratone are unlikely to be heard anywhere beyond this rather gorgeous CD in the near future.  With one drummer, two producers and guest performances to flesh things out, the recording studio feels like the natural habitat for this “futuristic roots music.” And what a shame that is.  Loping comfortably from swamp-funky work-outs such as “Mississippi Rising” to the dub ruminations of the title track, this is one of the most engaging and atmospheric instrumental albums you’ll hear all year.  As always, Frisell is a model of elegant restraint, but when he leads, as he does with brilliant conciseness on “Monsoon”, he’s the boss.
