Floratone
is an instrumental collective made up of the jazz guitarist Bill
Frisell, the drummer Matt Chamberlain and two producers, Lee Townsend
and Tucker Martine. As the odd lineup suggests, its self-titled debut
comes with some process-heavy back story: about how Mr. Frisell and
Mr. Chamberlain improvised in the studio, and how their producers
spliced and shaped the results into song sketches, which the musicians
then fleshed out... You could call it a mutant strain of Americana,
humid and cinematic, rich in reverb. Its chief business is atmosphere,
and it might best be experienced that way. Pay closer attention,
and it¹s possible to notice the myriad intricacies of shading
and grain: a perfectly placed guitar overdub, a lake-deep bass line.
